Training Philosophy
I believe everyone needs some sort of exercise/training goal in their life, whether that is to train and compete or to train and be healthy. I also believe they need to be progressed and trained appropriately based on their body, habits and their goals, taking measures to make sure skills and modalities are adequately developed before moving on to more technical or specific training aspects. Everyone starts somewhere on their fitness journey and I see it as my job to educate and help people to progress them in a manner that is not only safe but builds the base they need to achieve their goals.
What is something you have changed your mind about in the past 2 years?
In the past two years, my perspective on training has changed drastically from thinking that I know the answer to every question; to being humble and admitting that I do not know the answer, but I will figure it out. There is a saying “the more you learn, the less you know”. Someone could have definitely said that I thought of myself as a really good trainer who “knew” everything (or at least was never wrong), but in reality, what I knew was barely scratching the surface. For me, what changed was not being complacent with the knowledge I had, but always wanting to be better and more knowledgeable. noticing and realizing that there were other trainers doing and talking about things I have never heard of, and their clients were seeing progress and that was one of the main driving forces of this change in my perspective.
Who has been the biggest influence on you as a Health and Performance Coach?
I would like to say, Ernie, who has taught me a lot of the methods and ideas that I put into practice to this day, but the people who put me on that path of wanting to learn and better myself are Vyktoria Kay, Brett Shillington, and Lisa Eldridge.
Who has been the biggest influence on you as a person?
I want to say the whole Vo2max training crew, mainly Brett, Janine and Ron Turner who helped me find a passion for training and striving for a goal, I strongly believe you are the sum of the people who you surround yourself with.
What are your top 5 book recommendations?
I really enjoyed and learned a lot from:
- The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
- Grit by Angela Duckworth
- Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki
- The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker
- High-Performance Habits by Brendan Burchard
Current Training Goals for Yourself?
My goal is that I want to qualify for a CrossFit Competition through an online qualifier, the current focus in the 2020 Canwest Qualifier
What made you choose this career path?
This Career chose me as much as I chose it, I was offered a job to work the Vo2 front desk 7 years ago. After getting my A.C.E. Personal Trainer Certificate I have taught classes and trained here ever since.
Things you personally value in a coach?
What I value in a coach is the ability to stay humble, being able to admit that they, themselves don’t know the answer to a question or that they are wrong. I also value the hunger to learn, always trying to improve as much as they can.
